Relationships are one of the most common platforms for lying, with both men and women giving a stellar Pinocchio performance. Although dishonesty is unhealthy, I do think it’s worthwhile to try to understand why someone lies. It helps correct the core problem(s). And let’s face it; we all lie for different reasons. Women most often lie to spare someone’s feelings, make themselves look better, manipulate, or maintain control. Check out four of the most common lies women tell in a relationship to see if you’ve been a victim.

1. “Youre perfect, just the way you are.
Come on, we all know no one is perfect. If a genie popped out of your beer bottle, I’m sure you wouldn’t turn down a wish to upgrade your girlfriend. Besides, we only use this line when we can see your self-esteem dying out like the dinosaurs. So really we just want to make you feel better, which means we really care about you.

2. “Nothing is wrong.
If we need to say this, then most likely something is wrong. This is the mother of all of relationship lies. I don’t know one woman who hasn’t used this line, in a passive-aggressive manner. I admit, a lot of women think men are a long lost relative of Miss Cleo’s and therefore should know instinctively when something is bothering us. When it comes right down to it, we’re simply trying to manipulate you. We want attention, so do some gentle probing or dole out a little affection.

3. “Youre the best Ive ever been with.
I shouldn’t even have to tell you this one is a lie. Ever hear of ‘crime of passion’? Well, this fib is pretty much the same thing. Emotions can make women say either some really cruel or really sappy stuff.  But does it really matter? She’s sleeping with you.

4. “Im just not looking for anything serious right now.
If you’re worth it, she’s ready to be serious. I mean, I’m not about to tell Ryan Reynolds that I don’t want to be exclusive just because I feel like I have more living to do. Paris can wait. This line is code for, “I want to party more,” “I’m waiting for someone better to come along,” or “I’m just not that into you.” If you hear this, walk away because she’s using you and she’s not worth it.
